The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill has been reintroduced to Parliament for consideration, according to Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, Member of Parliament for Assin South.
The controversial bill, which seeks to ban LGBTQ+ activities and criminalize their promotion, advocacy, and funding, was previously passed by the 8th Parliament. However, it did not receive Presidential assent under former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration.
In an interview with Citi News on Thursday, February 27, Ntim Fordjour urged President John Dramani Mahama to approve the bill once it is passed by the current Parliament.
“Myself, Sam George, Hon. Bedzrah, Hon. Alhassan Tampuli, Hon. Abdul Kabiru, Hon. Ekow Vincent we have reintroduced it, and so it is to support the speedy passage of the bill so that he can assent to it,” he stated.
According to him, the bill has already been received and admitted, and legislative procedures will soon be set in motion. He emphasized that since it remains unchanged from the previous version, its passage should not face any significant delays.
“The chiefs, our imams, our clergymen, and the coalition who supported us are still strongly behind us. The Speaker is in support, and therefore, it is expected that it will be passed quickly,” he added.
The bill has sparked widespread debate in Ghana, with religious and traditional leaders backing its passage, while human rights activists and international organizations have raised concerns over its implications for individual freedoms and Ghana’s international standing.
Amnewsworld will continue to monitor developments on the bill as it progresses through Parliament.
