FIFA has launched its first-ever FIFA Talent Academy in Africa, marking a historic milestone for football development on the continent. The inauguration took place in Mauritania on Tuesday, coinciding with the grand reopening of the newly expanded Cheikha Ould Boidiya Stadium in the capital.
The initiative is part of FIFA’s ambitious plan to establish 75 elite FIFA Talent Academies worldwide by 2027, strengthening global football talent development.
Jill Ellis, FIFA’s Chief Football Officer, praised the launch, calling it a “wonderful day” not only for Mauritania but for FIFA as a whole. She emphasized the significance of collaboration in bringing the academy to life and expressed excitement about seeing young players engage in football activities.
The event was attended by top political and football dignitaries, celebrating the strides made in Mauritania’s football growth. Ahmed Yahya, President of the Mauritanian Football Association (FFRIM), highlighted the impact of FIFA’s support, revealing that the association now has a stadium fully funded by the FIFA Forward Program.
With the initial expansion increasing capacity to 8,000, additional funding will further expand the stadium to 16,000 seats, boosting the country’s football infrastructure and elevating its status on the international stage.
