Popular Congolese musician Delphin Katembo Vinywasiki, known as Delcat Idengo, has been killed in Goma, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), while filming a music video.
His body was discovered on Thursday with severe head injuries, reportedly from a gunshot wound. The identity of the attackers remains unknown, fueling speculation over the motive behind his murder.
A Voice for the People, Silenced
Idengo was widely known for his politically charged songs, which criticized both the Congolese government and rebel groups operating in the region. His latest song, Bunduki (Swahili for “weapon”), condemned the ongoing rebel occupation of Goma.
A fierce critic of President Félix Tshisekedi, Idengo had previously been jailed for inciting protests. He recently escaped prison during an M23 rebel attack, making his assassination even more controversial.
Protests and Demands for Justice
Following news of his death, protests erupted in his hometown of Beni, with demonstrators demanding justice. The Congolese government has condemned the killing, describing it as an “assassination”, while opposition leaders are calling for a swift investigation to identify and punish those responsible.
Idengo’s murder underscores the worsening security crisis in eastern DRC, where thousands have died in escalating rebel violence. As tensions rise, his death serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those who dare
to speak out.
