Ghana’s struggle against illegal mining, commonly known as “galamsey,” has reached a critical juncture, compelling local leaders to take determined action.
One of these bold leaders is the chief of Konongo in the Asante Akyim Central District of the Ashanti Region.
Such courageous steps not only highlights the pressing need to combat illegal mining but also sets a precedent for leadership and accountability within communities.
However, information has it that the Konongo traditional council has handed over one, Mr Kwabena Amofa, a.k.a Alhaji, to the Police at Konongo for interrogation and prosecution over his active engagement in illegal mining in the community.
Mr Amofa is alleged to have been the brain behind the ongoing glamasey activities at Konongo, the capital of Asante’ Akyim Central.

To the surprise of the Chiefs, the illegal mining activities ccontinued worsening in the community which prompted Nana Dr .Ing. Awuah Abedimisa II to invite the entire King’makers and Mr. Amofa to authenticate on his continued engagement in the galamsey activities, saw the need to call for his arrest and he was arrested and handed over to the Konongo District Police Commander, Superintendant Teddy Brown and the deputy CID Boss, Commander Kanton.
Speaking to the media, Nana Dr .Ing.Awuah Abedimisa II stated emphatically on his position on illegal mining that, he will not compromise his position as chief of Konongo and condone in any illegal mining or any illegal activites that may have the tendency of destroying water bodies, farmlands, and forest reserves in his community under his watch.
However, he is committed to ensuring that members in his community do not engage in illegal mining activities. Nana Dr. Ing. Awuah was quick to reiterate that non-community members contributed largely to the destruction of water bodies, deforestation, and loss of arable land, threatening the livelihood of the community and advice them to do the needful before the law enforcement agencies comes after them.
