U.S. President Donald Trump has revealed plans to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday as part of efforts to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday evening while traveling from Florida to Washington, Trump suggested a major development could be announced soon.
“We will see if we have something to announce maybe by Tuesday. I will be speaking to President Putin on Tuesday,” Trump said. “A lot of work’s been done over the weekend. We want to see if we can bring that war to an end.”
The potential discussion could mark a turning point in the ongoing conflict, with Trump signaling that issues related to land and power plants will be central to the talks.
“We will be talking about land. We will be talking about power plants,” he said, describing the negotiations as a process of “dividing up certain assets.”
The war, which began with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine three years ago, has left Moscow in control of large portions of Ukrainian territory. While European allies remain cautious of Trump’s relationship with Putin, his administration appears determined to push forward with a diplomatic solution.
Steve Witkoff, Trump’s special envoy, recently traveled to Moscow to advance negotiations, and on Sunday, he confirmed that a call between Trump and Putin was imminent.
Meanwhile, Trump reaffirmed his plans to impose tariffs starting April 2, despite concerns over market disruptions. He dismissed economic anxieties, calling the upcoming date “a liberating day for our country.”
“We’re getting back some of the wealth that very, very foolish presidents gave away because they had no clue what they were doing,” he stated.
Trump insisted there would be no backtracking on his trade measures. “They charge us and we charge them,” he said, adding that additional tariffs on automobiles, steel, and aluminum would follow.
As anticipation builds over the Trump-Putin conversation, the world watches closely to see if the U.S. president can deliver on his promise to broker an end to one of the most devastating wars of the decade.
