A Russian citizen has been detained by Latvian border guards after illegally crossing the state border in Liepna parish on Friday, January 10, according to a press release from the State Border Guard.
The incident was prompted by surveillance camera images showing an individual moving from the border toward Latvia. Border guards swiftly responded to the alert and discovered the individual, who lacked valid identity documents.
Criminal proceedings have been initiated against the individual for intentionally crossing the external state border illegally. Additionally, administrative proceedings are underway for failing to present documents confirming identity and the right to stay in Latvia, as well as for not possessing a permit to remain in the border area.
Further administrative charges have been filed for allegedly damaging, destroying, altering, or moving national border markers and related infrastructure, including technical means used for border inspection and surveillance.
The State Border Guard continues to investigate the incident, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the integrity and security of Latvia’s borders.
