In a groundbreaking initiative, Cinema Tdour is bringing the magic of movies to underserved communities across Tunisia, offering a mobile cinema experience to areas lacking access to traditional cinema halls.
This unique project, led by manager Meriam Ben Zayed, aims to bridge the cultural gap in regions where residents often have to travel up to 90 kilometers (56 miles) to watch a film. “Unfortunately, the cinema halls in Tunisia are all centered in the capital. Outside the capital, there are no cinemas,” Ben Zayed explained.
Equipped with a 100-seat capacity truck, Cinema Tdour does more than just screen films. It aims to inspire young audiences to explore their creative potential. “Among those watching the film, perhaps 50 of them will develop an interest in music, cinema, or theater. Instead of harming others, they will write a song,” said filmmaker Ines Ben Othmen, who recently presented her work to an audience before its screening.
The project also features motivational appearances by national heroes. Olympic Taekwondo Champion Firas Katoussi and Olympic Karate Champion Khalil Jandoubi attended a recent event in Tunis, encouraging children to pursue their dreams despite challenges. “We come from humble neighborhoods and did not find the encouragement and support we needed. We believed in ourselves and succeeded,” Jandoubi said, inspiring the crowd with his story.
Adding to its mission, the initiative collaborates with the World Health Organization to provide educational sessions on public health, further enriching the community’s experience.
The mobile cinema operates under the motto “The cinema comes to you wherever you are,” ensuring that even the most overlooked areas of Tunisia can enjoy the world of film. While prioritizing rural communities, the truck also made stops in Tunis during December, delighting urban audiences as well.
This innovative approach to culture and entertainment is not just about movies but also about empowering communities and spreading awareness, ensuring that no one is left behind in Tunisia’s cinematic journey.
