The national Itorero program was officially launched on Friday, December 27, 2024, at Fawe Girls School in Gisozi Sector, Gasabo District, Kigali. This initiative, involving over 1,300 young participants known as Intore, is part of a nationwide effort to instill patriotism, civic responsibility, and Rwandan cultural values in the youth.
Program Highlights
The Itorero, which runs for four days, allows participants to transition directly into urugerero activities without going through the traditional ingando camps. These activities emphasize community service and practical contributions to national development, such as constructing homes for the needy and participating in other communal initiatives.
Participants, including young men and women in their final year of secondary school under the 12th-grade Inkomezabigwi Itorero program, expressed enthusiasm about the lessons imparted, particularly on Rwandan history, cultural values, and societal taboos.
Youth Perspectives
Chanceline Ishimwe Shema, one of the Intore, reflected on the importance of youth understanding their role in Rwanda’s history. “We know that many young people played a significant role in the Genocide against the Tutsi. Learning these values helps us shape a better future,” he said.
Another participant, Desire, emphasized the program’s transformative potential: “What we gain here is invaluable. We plan to educate others on these lessons, as many of us didn’t know the origins of ingando or its significance.”
Government’s Vision
Eric Mahoro, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of National Unity and Civic Engagement, highlighted the program’s objectives. “Studying is important, but being a good Rwandan is equally vital. This Itorero is an opportunity for young people to embrace cultural values and use them as guiding principles throughout their lives,” he stated.
Future Activities and Expansion
After two days of learning and activities at the camp, participants will return to their communities on December 30 to commence urugerero at a local level. Outstanding performers will be invited to advanced training camps focused on patriotism and national responsibilities.
The Ministry plans to further invest in these camps, recognizing their impact in fostering unity and instilling a sense of responsibility among Rwanda’s youth. The communal environment at the camps not only strengthens bonds but also inspires lasting change, aligning with the nation’s goals of unity and sustainable development.
This initiative reflects Rwanda’s ongoing commitment to cultivating a generation of responsible, patriotic citizens dedicated to the country’s growth and cohesion.
