In an unforgettable moment at the PNC Championship, 15-year-old Charlie Woods proved that golfing talent runs deep in the family. During the final round of the tournament at the Ritz-Carlton Club Orlando, Charlie made his first-ever hole-in-one on the par-3 fourth hole. The shot, executed with a precise 7-iron from 175 yards, drew wild cheers from the gallery and an emotional reaction from his father, Tiger Woods.
“That was the thrill of a lifetime to be able to have that moment with Charlie, make his first hole-in-one,” said an elated Tiger Woods. The golfing legend admitted the experience was even more exhilarating than if he had achieved the ace himself.
Charlie’s ace was a highlight of a day filled with impressive play by Team Woods. Competing in the scramble format, the duo posted a stellar 15-under 57, putting them in contention for the win. However, their efforts fell just short as Bernhard Langer drained an 18-foot eagle putt in the playoff to secure the victory for his team.
Despite the loss, the day’s memories were more than enough for the Woods family. “It was awesome having Dad there,” said Charlie. “That was so much fun. It was just a perfect 7-iron, little cut in there. Of course never got to see it go in. So that sucks. But that’s all right.”
Charlie initially didn’t realize the ball had gone in. The gallery’s enthusiastic cheers and gestures—some pointing downward to indicate the ball was in the hole hinted at the extraordinary feat. Television cameras confirmed the ace moments later, prompting a celebratory embrace between father and son.
“We heard it up on the green on the right and left but we were totally unsure until the TV confirmed it. And we went nuts,” Tiger recalled. “I don’t know what we did, but we enjoyed it. It was an unbelievable moment.”
This marked the fifth consecutive year Tiger and Charlie have participated in the 36-hole tournament, and it was their second runner-up finish. Yet, the sheer joy of the day overshadowed the outcome. When asked to rank the day on his personal “fun meter,” Charlie didn’t hesitate. “No. 1,” he declared. “It’s not even close.”
Charlie Woods, a sophomore at Benjamin School in North Palm Beach, continues to demonstrate that he’s a force to be reckoned with on the golf course. For now, the young golfer is savoring his monumental achievement and looking forward to more shared moments with his legendary father.
