British pop sensation Ed Sheeran has issued an apology to Ruben Amorim, the new head coach of Manchester United, after unintentionally disrupting Amorim’s live television interview following United’s 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town on Sunday.
Amorim was speaking to Sky Sports about his first match in charge of United when Sheeran approached analyst Jamie Redknapp to greet him. The interaction briefly interrupted the interview, prompting Redknapp to pause and tell Sheeran, “Come and say hello in a minute.”
Sheeran, a devoted Ipswich Town fan and minority stakeholder in the club, later took to Instagram to address the incident. “Apologies if I offended Amorim yesterday,” Sheeran wrote. “Didn’t actually realize he was being interviewed at the time, was popping to say hi and bye to Jamie.”
Sheeran’s Ipswich Connection
The pop star was seen celebrating after Ipswich’s Omari Hutchinson scored the equalizing goal during the match at Portman Road. Sheeran’s connection to the club goes beyond fandom—Ipswich CEO Mark Ashton recently revealed that Sheeran played a role in securing a new player for the team during the offseason, even taking a Zoom call with the player just before performing with Taylor Swift.
A Memorable Start for Amorim
Amorim’s debut as Manchester United coach began with an explosive start, with Marcus Rashford scoring in the second minute. However, Ipswich leveled the match through a deflected effort by Hutchinson, resulting in a draw.
Sky Sports analyst Jamie Redknapp later shared pictures on Instagram featuring Sheeran alongside fellow pundits Roy Keane, Izzy Christiansen, and presenter Kelly Cates in the studio.
While the interruption was unintended, the incident added a lighthearted moment to a tense match, as Amorim adjusts to the spotlight of managing one of football’s most high-profile clubs.
