Acclaimed actress Keke Palmer has revealed how a timely gesture from Will Smith helped her navigate a challenging period in her early career as a Hollywood star.

During a recent appearance on The Toast podcast, Keke shared that at 17 years old, she considered seeking emancipation from her parents while working on the Nickelodeon series True Jackson, VP (2008–2011). However, a phone call from Will Smith convinced her to reconsider.

“I got a call from this really obscure number,” Keke recounted on the November 19 episode. “I was like, ‘What? This is weird, I’m not answering this.’” After missing the call, she listened to a voicemail from the Hitch actor, who had learned of her situation through her lawyer.

Imitating Will’s voice, Keke recalled the message: “Hey, Keke. It’s Will. We’re over here doing Karate Kid with [my son] Jaden. I just want to let you know I talked to [your lawyer]. He let me know everything you’re going through, and I want you to know sometimes it’s hard being the first, but you’ll get through. Just keep staying focused, love on your family, and y’all gonna be good.”

Challenges of Growing Up in the Spotlight

Keke admitted that her early stardom placed significant strain on her relationship with her parents, leaving her feeling misunderstood. “I did have problems with my parents during that time, just them not understanding what I was going through,” she said. “So, it wasn’t totally peachy keen.”

However, she emphasized the importance of having a supportive network, crediting her parents for fostering a community that promoted unity rather than division. “I’ve always had a lot of people—whether they’re notable names or my attorney—that encouraged community and not dissension or us breaking apart,” she noted.

Gratitude for Her Parents’ Guidance

Despite the difficulties, Keke expressed appreciation for her parents’ efforts to guide her through the complexities of Hollywood. “I think my parents did a really great job trying to explain to me what it was I was doing at these companies so I didn’t take things personally,” she shared.

Reflecting on their support, Keke praised her mother in particular for helping her process how the industry could impact self-esteem and personal growth.
