Chidimma Adetshina, a law student and model with roots in both South Africa and Nigeria, was crowned Miss Universe Africa and Oceania on Saturday, November 16, at the 73rd Miss Universe competition held in Mexico.
Representing Nigeria, Adetshina made history as the first runner-up to Miss Denmark, Victoria Kjær Theilvig, who claimed the title of Miss Universe 2024. This marks the first time a Danish contestant has won the global pageant, succeeding Sheynnis Palacios of Nicaragua.
Adetshina’s journey to the international stage was not without challenges. Born and raised in South Africa, she withdrew from the Miss South Africa pageant in August after facing xenophobic attacks online. Her resilience and determination saw her rise to international prominence just three months later, bringing pride to both Nigeria and Africa.
“This is a moment of great joy and empowerment,” Adetshina said during her post-event interview. “It’s an honor to represent my heritage and stand tall for Africa on a global stage.”
Miss Mexico, Miss Thailand, and Miss Venezuela were named second, third, and fourth runners-up, respectively.
The 73rd edition of Miss Universe was a landmark event for Africa, with a record-breaking 18 contestants from the continent competing for the crown. Out of 125 participating countries, Africa’s representation stood out, showcasing the region’s rich diversity and beauty.
As the Miss Universe organization continues to emphasize inclusivity and cultural representation, Adetshina’s achievement shines as a beacon of hope and inspiration for young women across the globe.
