Background
Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, indefinitely suspended parliamentary proceedings due to a lack of quorum.
The adjournment occurred on Tuesday, October 22, following a heated session marked by clashes between members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the composition of the Majority in Parliament.
During the session, Speaker Bagbin briefly mentioned receiving a communication from the Supreme Court but withheld further details. It is believed that the message pertains to the ongoing legal dispute regarding the declaration of four parliamentary seats as vacant, a decision the Supreme Court has temporarily stayed.
Earlier in the day, NPP MPs walked out of the Chamber, leaving the NDC to occupy both sides of the House.
While the official reason for the adjournment was the absence of a quorum the minimum number of MPs needed to conduct business the day’s political tensions also played a significant role in the disruption.
Speaker Bagbin’s decision to withhold commentary on the Supreme Court’s communication leaves the issue of the vacant seats unresolved, further deepening the uncertainty in Parliament. With the indefinite adjournment, it remains unclear when proceedings will resume as both parties await further guidance.
