A renowned communicator of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ellen Ama Daaku, has urged Ghanaian men to thoroughly acquaint themselves with the country’s marriage laws before making marital commitments. The advice comes against the backdrop of rising divorce rates and legal disputes stemming from marital issues in Ghana.
During Angel 102.9 FM and Television on Monday, Daaku highlighted how a lack of understanding and appreciation for Ghana’s marriage laws often leads to complicated legal battles, financial losses, and emotional distress for many families, indicating a growing concern among Ghanaian men about the implications of marriage under the legal framework of the country.
“Ghana’s marriage laws are intricate, encompassing customary, Islamic, civil, and ordinance marriages, each with its unique legal stipulations,” Daaku explained. “Failing to understand these can lead to severe unintended consequences, especially when it comes to issues like property rights, inheritance, and custody of children in the event of divorce.”
Daaku’s advice is timely, as Ghana sees a gradual shift in marital patterns, with more couples opting for what are perceived as modern forms of marriage without fully understanding their legal ramifications. This shift underscores the importance of legal literacy in marital decisions, a point Daaku passionately advocates for.
